"Chichester Gardens"

OctoberFest 1839

 (Incorporating)  Stanley Street Stroll

The inaugural Chichester Gardens OctoberFest was held on Wednesday 13th October 2010.

$25 Tickets included Tour, 2 course Meal + Omm-Pah music by 'Adelaide Village Band' at the Lion Hotel.

Chichester Gardens Cottage, In 1851 Diedrich Kretschmer extended a small house into the two cottages you see today and possibly constructed up the ‘M’ shaped roof with loft access. The eastern cottage (oldest) is constructed with brick quoins around the door and window; the bricks were imported as ship ballast! It is interesting to note the building techniques change between the two constructions and in particular the brick lintels over the doors and windows changes between East Cottage & West Cottage.

Chichester Gardens was the site of Adelaide's First vineyard planted by John Barton Hack, The Governor declared "The grapes are excellent" This land covered 12 town acres.

In 1839 J B Hack subdivided Chichester Gardens Estate into 228 lots which were served by three new streets known as Sussex Street, and East and West Pallant Streets in memory of the English region from where J B Hack had emigrated.

When Hack became bankrupt and was forced to sell his properties, this location became Adelaide's largest subdivision of small blocks on which modest houses were built.

"Chichester Gardens" attracted immigrants predominately of German and Irish nationality which created the village atmosphere that still exists today.

Colonial Adelaide

In 1848 Frederic Spanhake, bought three "Chichester Gardens" allotments  and soon afterwards constructed a house, bakehouse and stables. Spanhake became insolvent and in 1855 the property passed to a baker and fellow countryman Heinrich Kollomorgan.

Today, homemade cakes and pastries are freshly baked at the Bakehouse Cafe within "Chichester Gardens" at 108 Melbourne Street.

The scale and style demonstrates the increased desirability of this area and the continuous importance of corner hotels and shops to residential communities of the nineteenth century. Situated on the corner of Jerningham St. and Stanley St. Lot 228 of JB Hack's 'Chichester Gardens' circa 1895 'the Wage family'

The building with its small attached corner shop. the building on the site was associated with the cocker family for over 100 years from 1854 until 1956. Cocker is known for his establishment of the Kentish Arms Hotel opposite.

Kentish Arms Hotel, established in 1848 by John Cocker.

It stands on the North East corner of 'Chichester Gardens Estate'. on allotments 172 and 173.

Kentish Arms Hotel. At the corner of East Pallant and Stanley Streets, this two-storey arched masonry verandah gives this second hotel a distinctive character.

It also played its part in the state's sporting history. Publican John Cocker was a handy bowler in Kent before he took up the License here in 1848, and so he founded the Kent and Sussex Cricket Club at the pub, with its cricket ground out the front where exclusive Mann Terrace meets the parklands. He was entrusted with the first wicket at the Adelaide Oval in 1872

Prior to the ‘Guided Tour’ drizzling rain threatened and John Crawford the Church Warden of the Anglican - St Cyprian’s in Melbourne Street opened the church so people could sit and wait. Of interest, John pointed out the church organ was made in North Adelaide in the 1880’s for Holy Trinity on North Terrace but eventually came back over the river to St Cyprian’s.

I explained the history of the church and area, ‘Chichester Gardens’ as the name suggests started as a large garden. When pioneer John Barton Hack arrived Colonel Light was still surveying Adelaide. Hack had bought with him plants that needed planting as well as the first bullock team and 2 manning houses for his young family.

St. Andrews

Dominating Stanley Street as one of the most impressively located mansions in Adelaide, it was designed by by James Mac George as his own home in 1862.

The western wing was added in 1881 when David Murray, successful national merchant, lived here. Constructed of local limestone with dressings strongly picked out in well detailed brickwork.

The design incorporates unusual architectural features such as pilasters to openings and the French mansard roof. The property has extensive views of the City of Adelaide and surrounding Adelaide Hills.

One of the most prominent townscape features of Adelaide, the church was once described as a "resort for enquiring minds".

The Classical style church, which was designed by E Wright and E Hamilton in 1860 as a result of a design competition, is one of the most substantial buildings erected in South Australia as a place of worship for a non-conformist denomination.

Opened in February 1861. It was another 10 years before the 107ft tower was added

Gottfried Rieger built 4 row cottages in the 1850's on JB Hack's allotments 143 and 144 the land was bought for £25.

113-119 Sussex with slate-roofs semi-detached houses, date from 1876-79 and are separated by a common driveway

While this property is not as old as its neighbours it is important due to its intact external appearance with picket fence, verandah, double-fronted plan with brick parapet and 'M' shaped roof. it dates from 1854.

An acre of land was purchased at a cost of £130. The cottages were erected to house "widows, the aged and infirm poor" begun in 1872-73 with the construction of the first 5 cottages. in 1972 the subsequent subdivision and sale of 26 individual cottages occurred.

The foundation stone was laid on 11th February 1877. The Church and parochial school served the Catholic community after their founding by Blessed Mary Mckillop in 1866.

The inaugural ‘Chichester Gardens OctoberFest” on 13th October 2010 was a big success although attendance was small and rain threatened the ‘guided tour’ was successful.

This area first began as a Garden, which included vines; it was therefore Adelaide’s first vineyard all be it for a very short time.

Two years latter J. Barton Hack subdivided this area into 228 small building allotments and incorporated Sussex Street, East and West Pallant Streets and this area became known as ‘Chichester Gardens Estate’. It was not only the first vineyard but also Adelaide’s first major residential subdivision! It appears on the 'Kingston Map' of 1840.

Only 4 days later on Sunday 17th October 2010 / AUSTRALIA's first Saint -  SAINT MARY McKILLOP.
