The area was the site of Adelaide's first vineyard, (Planted by John Barton Hack.)

An internal door lintel  is a recycled vine post! (it was common practice for the pioneers to use building materials that were readily available).

B. Hack owned 12 town acres which he named Chichester Gardens in memory of the area in England from where he immigrated . Hack also operated a brick-kiln in Melbourne Street. Limestone is abundant to the area. and used as the prominent building material of Chichester Gardens Cottage.

During restoration in 1989 the original paving around the house was unearthed constructed of river pebbles. (Most likely from the nearby Torrens River). The Adelaide Council raised Stanley street to eliminate a natural dip! This action resulted in newer paving being constructed over the pebbles and at a higher level.

The east facing loft was used for a storage area and has a timber floor.

The timber roofing shingles still exist under the corrugated iron sheeting.
